Cheryl - sorry I didn't notice your question three weeks ago - my comment notification isn't working!

The MIB contact instructions are in the link at the end of the original post: <a href="http://www.mib.com/html/request_your_record.html" rel="nofollow">http://www.mib.com/html/request_your_record.html</a>

I have an update: I had several email exchanges with an MIB official, and although I didn't get direct answers to my questions, here's the bottom line as I read it:

- Nobody (nobody, not nohow) is responsible for whether the information about you is accurate. It's entirely up to you to detect and fix any errors. Most of the responses I got amounted to detailed repetition of how to request your MIB (during the hours that their robot is turned on) and how to request a fix.

- Nobody (nobody, not nohow) is responsible for any economic damage suffered by a patient as a result of such errors. Nobody, that is, except the patient (aka the victim).

In other words, the MIB and its contributors are not the least bit responsible for doing anything right, and if they don't, it's entirely and exclusively your problem.

Personally, I think that's disgusting, and I think some legislation would be in order.

p.s. Interestingly, the official revealed some details about the woman's case. I don't know, but a medically astute friend pointed out that this might be a HIPAA violation. In any case, a delightful indication of their concern for our privacy!

e-Patient Dave -- This is a very sobering post. I like to think of myself as a fairly savvy patient, but I didn't know anything about the MIB before reading your post. Can you please share the 800 number needed to request my *free* report?

Thanks for the enlightenment!

On his own blog post about this, Ted Eytan has just <a href="http://www.tedeytan.com/2008/08/26/1486" rel="nofollow">commented</a> that he tried twice to use the toll-free line to request a copy of his own MIB record.

The first time the system said it couldn't understand his response. The second time it said "We are closed"! Who ever heard of an automated line that's turned off on weekends??

I just tried it myself, and he's right. I'm stunned! Certainly doesn't seem to be a system that's set up with any concern at all for consumer protection. Sounds like it might be worth talking to someone in an attorney general's office

Ted also alludes to a fairly modern idea: why not provide a web form?
