I watched the FDA Social Media hearings via the webcast, and there were more groups who represented consumers / patients in the agenda than you think.

They were:

• Kim Witczak (as you already mentioned), who spoke twice

• Consumers Union (publishers of Consumers Reports), who certainly believe they speak for the average consumer

• National Research Center for Women & Families, who believe they speak for consumers, who spoke twice

• PEW Prescription Project, a public non-profit that does research for the public good

Now, having said that, the meeting was certainly populated with more commercial entities. I know there was buzz about it before it happened.

Diana Zuckerman of the National Research Center for Women & Families was asked why there were so few representatives of the patient at the hearings, the FDA certainly would have made room in the agenda for them, and the hearings were not a secret. Her answer was that the healthcare reform debate was taking all their time.
